E! for Windows - Version 1.2
____________________________
This package contains a fully functional copy of E! for Windows, a text
editor primarily designed for programmers but that will be a great help for
any Microsoft Windows (tm) user who has to deal with text files.
E! for Windows is a very powerful product that has a very large number of
features. We hope that you'll be as much excited about this product as we
are.
E! is distributed as a User supported Software. This means that it is no
free or Public Domain software but that you may give it a try before
purchasing it. Please read the licence agreement contained in LICENCE.TXT.
If you use this software regularly, you have to pay the registration fee
otherwise you have to stop using E! after the 60-day trial period and to
uninstall it. Registered users will receive a printed documentation, the E!
for Windows API documentation (the API remains undocumented in this version
although sample Extension DLLs are provided) and will benefit from a FAX
hot-line. You will also receive a registration code allowing you to get rid
of the reminder dialog box and to disable the CRC verification.
The API Documentation is reserved for registered users. However, not having
this documentation will not prevent you from using Extension DLLs written by
registered programmers or distributed by us.
Technical questions about E! may be sent to the following Compuserve userid:
Patrick Philippot (the author) : 72561,3532
or uploaded to the IBMAPP EDITORS forum or to any forum where E! could have
been uploaded.
Questions related to distribution and registration should be faxed to the
following number in Karlsruhe, Germany:
(0721) 373842
Registration information is contained in the file ORDER.FRM.
Have fun using E!.
1. INSTALLING E! FOR WINDOWS
____________________________
WARNING!!
****************************************************************************
E! for Windows should always be installed from an installation diskette. The
installation program does some initial setup and you may run into trouble if
you merely copy the unarchived files to your disk. We do not support versions
not installed from an original, unmodified installation diskette.
If you give the program to others, please give an unmodified installation
diskette (as described below). You may not give away a registered copy of E!
for Windows or a copy of the API documentation.
****************************************************************************
The package that you have downloaded or received on a diskette should
contain the following files:
DISK1_72 Identification file
INSTALL.EXE Installation program loader
READ.ME This file
LHARC.EXE The well-known archiver
LICENCE.TXT Licence Agreement
ORDER.FRM Order Form
VENDOR.TXT Information for Disk Vendors
INSTALL.LZH Installation data
FILES1.LZH Installation data
COPY72.BAT
or
COPY36.BAT Installation batch (if INSTALL is not used)
CHANGES.TXT Change history
MOREDOC.TXT Additional documentation
Please copy these files (if not already done) to a single diskette (1,2 MB,
720K or 1,44 MB format).
To install, launch Windows (version 3.1 is required) and enter "a:install" at
the File|Run prompt of the Program Manager.
A dialog box will appear after some temporary files have been copied to your
disk (they will be removed afterwards). This dialog box allows you to change
the default directories used by E! when installing. Don't change them unless
you have a good reason to do that.
Then click on the "GO" button and wait until the installation process
finishes.
You should then insert the EW and USER directories created by the
installation program in the PATH statement of your AUTOEXEC.BAT.
You may want to install EW in a Program Manager's Group. This is not done
automatically because of some incompatilities with some replacement shell
programs (programs replacing PROGMAN.EXE). We'll try to solve these problems
with future versions of the INSTALL program. You just have to install
EW.EXE. EWX.EXE is called by E! when needed and should not be called
directly. If you do so, results are unpredictable.
Once E! for Windows has been installed, please read the documentation
(EW.WRI) at least once (even rapidly). This will give you a good feeling
about the fundamentals of E!. We have tried to make this documentation as
complete and as short as possible. We don't think that you should lose too
much time learning a tool that you are supposed to use everyday.
If, for some reason, INSTALL doesn't work on your system, you can use
COPY72.BAT or COPY36.BAT (depending on which diskette format EW is
distributed) to install the distribution files:
copy72 a c
to install from drive a: to drive c:.
In that case don't forget to do the following:
- Set the USER directory from the Control Center File|Directories menu.
- Include EW and EW\USER in your PATH.
This procedure should be used only as a last resort way of installing E!. It
is highly recommended that you use the INSTALL program.
2. DISK VENDORS
Please read VENDOR.TXT.
Please also read the Licence Agreement. Disk Vendors may not charge more
than $5 (or its equivalent in local currency) for a diskette containing the
installation files of E! for Windows. Also, E! for Windows may not be
distributed on diskettes containing other products unless instructions are
given describing how to build an installation diskette from the distributed
disk.
Any vendor willing to market and distribute E! in its own country should
contact

Germany
tel: +49 (030) 342 00 37
fax: +49 (030) 341 06 38
for a distribution agreement. Please DO NOT contact GIS for any other subject.

questions (API programming) addressed by FAX to Juergen Egeling Computer
or uploaded to the above mentioned Compuserve userid and forum.
4. IMPORTANT CHANGES SINCE LAST DOCUMENTATION UPDATE
Please see MOREDOC.TXT
Attention Registered Users:
The API has been modified and new functions added. You'll find all
necessary information in EWAPI.SUP.
EWAPIIMP.TPU and EWAPIIMP.TPW are no longer distributed. You must delete
your old copies and recompile the new units. EWAPI.LIB is up-to-date.
5. REGISTERING ONLINE
If you have a Compuserve account, registration online is now possible.
GO SWREG and use program id #586. You'll receive your registration code
within two days through CIS e-mail and the printed documentation by mail.
6. TECHNICAL NOTES
Technical notes will give you immediate information about specific problems
arising when using E! in certain environments or in conjunction with other
programs like compilers. They will be uploaded as EWTECH.??? text files, ???
being the number of the Technical Note or released along with the EW package.
7. UPDATES
Information about updates can be obtained from the above mentioned FAX
number.
Updates or fixes may be distributed as patches. Beginning with version
1.20 of EW, we distribute a copy of PATCH.EXE, the program used to
apply these patches. We will *not* upload PATCH.EXE along with the
patches themselves. Please keep PATCH.EXE in a safe place to be able
to use it when necessary.
